Well the best way is giving л л them a copy of Live at the Carnegie Hall, because л л some bands are better on stage, others are worst, л л but Renaissance is just as good in both л л situations. л л All the tracks are perfectly selected, almost as л л if this album was the best of Renaissance, they л л maintain the same spirit and atmosphere than in л л their original versions with the addition to л л listen the reaction of the audience. л л But what is Renaissance? Maybe the most symphonic л л of the bands with an evident folk and classical л л influence that can hardly be compared with another л л progressive group. л л Most people believe the wonderful Annie Haslam is л л 90% of the band, but they forget John Tout's л л impressive keyboards and amazing piano solos, л л Michael Dunford's efficient guitar (Better than on л л studio), Terrence Sullivan precise drumming and л л Joe Camp who adds strength with his bass, a л л complete band that represents the perfect example л л of what Symphonic Progressive means. л л But back to Annie, there's not much to say about л л her voice that haven't been said before, she's by л л large one of the best female voices in all genres, л л well educated and sweet, sings with equal strength л л the symphonic Sheherezade as the folksy Carpet on л л the Sun, a complete vocalist. л л All the tracks of this album are near perfection, л л but the ones that have impressed me most are: л л Prologue: The first song I ever heard by this band л л and gave me the need to listen more of their л л stuff, a perfect opener for any concert or album, л л the piano introduction is simply astonishing, full л л of strength with a perfect backup by the drums and л л Annie's choirs, totally different to most л л Renaissance tracks but at the same time shows as л л how good and versatile they are. л л Ocean Gypsy is a beautiful ballad where Annie's л л voice is obviously the center of attention, even л л when the rest of the band and The New York л л Philharmonic Orchestra enhance the music and л л vocals; the attention of the listener is based in л л the soft and sweet interpretation that Annie л л gives. л л Can You Understand is another almost perfect song, л л opened by John Tout's piano and perfectly followed л л by all the band where John Camp's bass adds л л strength, this strong intro goes for three minutes л л when the music suddenly gets softer to let Annie л л Haslam does her part creating a very pleasant л л contrast between the powerful and electric intro л л and the acoustic mood that backups her voice. л л Around the middle, the band changes the mood again л л creating an Oriental atmosphere, which leads to л л another vocal section, but the best comes at the л л end, another frantic passage with the whole Band л л and Orchestra giving 110% of them. Ten minutes of л л Progressive Rock, simply incredible. л л Another track that impressed me very much is л л Mother Russia, which represents carefully many л л aspects of that country, from the greatness of л л their monuments and buildings like The Kremlin to л л the sadness of their hard geography and weather. л л But again the most incredible achievement of the л л band is their versatility to change styles and л л influences from one song to another. л л Of course no review about this album will be л л complete without some words about Song of л л Sheherezade, probably their most famous epic based л л in the 1001 Arabian Nights which the band л л describes before the track, don't ask me where did л л Renaissance added almost 5 minutes to the original л л version (which is only 24 minutes long) because I л л have no idea but that's not very important like л л saying that the song is full of changes, л л Orchestral passages plus male and female vocal л л sections that come one after another as if it was л л a musical collage, once again they achieve their л л goal to create a realistic Arabian atmosphere that л л fits perfectly with the story and lyrics, by far л л the best song of the album and probably from their л л whole career. л л After listening Live at Carnegie Hall, I can't л л understand why Renaissance doesn't get the л л recognition that they deserve, because this album л л is a masterpiece that every progressive fan must л л own. Without any doubt I give 5 stars to the л л album. л В В Б Б А CD 1/3 : А А 1. Prologue 8:10 А А 2. Ocean Gypsy 7:16 А А 3. Kiev 8:09 А А 4. Can You Understand 10:48 А А 5.
