As bandleader of Wooden °Þ Ý° Shjips and one half of Moon Duo, Johnson has continually °Þ Ý° charted new cosmic paths that expand on the language of the °Þ Ý° genre. With Rose City Band, Johnson’s songwriting and °Þ Ý° beautiful guitar lines take center stage, the veil of °Þ Ý° psychedelia notably drawn back. While his vocal treatment °Þ Ý° would be recognizable to any Wooden Shjips fan, the °Þ Ý° sparseness of the instrumentation lays bare the beauty of his °Þ Ý° writing. Shimmering guitar lines are free to shine, buoyed by °Þ Ý° driving rhythms. New to the mix are arrangements and °Þ Ý° instruments drawn directly from classic country, resulting in °Þ Ý° songs with more than a hint of twang. The aptly named °Þ Ý° Summerlong, born of Johnson’s own fondness for the season, °Þ Ý° delivers an emotional lift—an expression akin to the joy of °Þ Ý° getting out there on a warm day, be it gathering for a BBQ, °Þ Ý° hopping onto a bike, leaping into a swimming hole, or simply °Þ Ý° reading in a park. °Þ Ý° °Þ Ý° Rose City Band started purely as a recording project, with °Þ Ý° Johnson's role mostly obscured for the self-titled debut °Þ Ý° album. Released with no promotion, in the style of private °Þ Ý° press records, it was a liberating act, a focus on music °Þ Ý° without any expectations. Explaining it with a chuckle, °Þ Ý° Johnson elaborates, “I always would threaten to my friends °Þ Ý° that I’m gonna start a country rock band so I can retire and °Þ Ý° just play down at the pub every Thursday night during happy °Þ Ý° hour. I love being able to tour and travel, but I also like °Þ Ý° the idea of having a local band … more of a social music °Þ Ý° experience.” Freedom from expectation and obligation gave °Þ Ý° Johnson the space to experiment with new instrumentation and °Þ Ý° arrangements. The introduction of lap steel, mandolin, and °Þ Ý° jaw harp enhance Johnson’s lean guitar work with radiant °Þ Ý° overtones, placing Summerlong more overtly within the country °Þ Ý° tradition than its predecessor. Work on the album began at °Þ Ý° Johnson’s home studio in Portland during the summer, but, °Þ Ý° interrupted by touring, it would not be finished until the °Þ Ý° winter season. The dark isolation of winter and the pining °Þ Ý° for summer’s easier days can be felt in the album’s few °Þ Ý° quieter moments. Summerlong was mixed by John McEntire °Þ Ý° (Stereolab, Broken Social Scene, Tortoise) at his newly °Þ Ý° minted Portland Soma Studios and mastered by Amy Dragon at °Þ Ý° Telegraph Mastering, also based in Portland. °Þ Ý° °Þ Ý° Buoyant and joyous, Summerlong is a captivating listen that °Þ Ý° leaves the listener yearning for more. The record is an ode °Þ Ý° to freedom, born of a musician stepping out of all routines °Þ Ý° and whose own liberation is communicated so completely in his °Þ Ý° music. Summerlong is a record that, taken in its entirety, is °Þ Ý° an emphatic statement on the songwriting power of Ripley °Þ Ý° Johnson. Johnson’s joy in every aspect of this album is °Þ Ý° delightfully infectious. °Þ Ý° °Þ Ý° °Þ Ý° ÜÜÜÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ °Þ Ý° ±±±³ marr ³±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±± °Þ Ý° ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ °Þ Ý° °Þ Ý° indie . pop . rock . shoegaze . dream . jangle . twee °Þ Ý° chamber . noise . c-86 . college . goth . post . kraut °Þ Ý° darkwave . alternative . lo-fi . country . americana °Þ Ý° folk . folk/rock . psychedelic . progressive . metal °Þ Ý° heavy . hair . math . grunge . classic . southern . aor °Þ Ý° west coast . punk . garage . avantgarde . classical °Þ Ý° electronic . ambient °Þ Ý° °Þ Ý° °Þ °Ý° ° Û Û ° °Þ° Ý° ²²Û Û²² °Þ Ý° °Û Û° °Þ Ý° Û ° ± ° ° ± ° Û °Þ ° Ý°ÛÛ ° ±ÛÛÛÛÛ° °ÛÛÛÛÛ± ° ÛÛ°Þ ° ± ° Ý°Û ° ÛÛÛ² ²ÛÛ ± ± ÛÛ² ²ÛÛÛ ° Û°Þ ° ± °ÛÛ ÝÛ² ÛÛÛÛ Û± ±Û ÛÛÛÛ ²°Þ ÛÛ° °ÛÛÛÛÛÛ° ÛÛÛ Û Û ÛÛÛ °ÛÛÛÛÛÛ° ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛ Û Û ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ±ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛ± ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ ±ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛ± ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ± Û Û ± ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ° ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ° °° Û Û °° °ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ °ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ° ÛÛÛÛ± ± ²Û Û± ±Û Û² ± ±ÛÛÛÛ °ÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ° ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛ Û Û ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ °ÛÛÛÛÛ ±ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ° ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ± ÛÛÛÛ±±Û Û±±ÛÛÛÛ ±ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ° ÛÛÛÛÛÛ± ° ÛÛÛ° ÛÛÛ ° * Û²² ²² ²²Û * ° ÛÛÛ °ÛÛÛ ° Û° ÛÛÛ Û° *** * * Û±Û±±ÛÛÛÛÛÛ±±Û±Û * * *** °Û ÛÛÛ °Û ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛ * ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ * ÛÛ ÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ * *** ° °ÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛÛ° ° *** * ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ ÛÛÛÛÛ ** ° ÛÛÛÛ ²²²²²²²² ÛÛÛÛ ° ** ÛÛÛÛÛ ±ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ±± °° °° ±±ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ± °²ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ± °° °° ±ÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛÛ²° ±ÛÛÛÛÛ °° °° ÛÛÛÛÛ± ÛÛÛ ÛÛÛ ÛÛ ÛÛ ±Û Û± https://play.google.com/store/music/album?id=Baee54qu4nzz722eqbwgjg4xl6a
