Inclassable musique que voici, mi-tcheque,
mi-ambiance, mi-africano-greco-australienne,
mi-avant-gardiste, mi-tango, mi-internationale ca
fait beaucoup de mi pour un instrument souvent en
si bemol !), jouee par un ensemble de clarinettes
que viennent parfois temperer des percussions pour
l'element jazzy, des voix, quelques flutes a bec,
une guitare basse, un piano bastringue, un quatuor
a cordes et divers effets sonores dont le
didgeridoo, assez peu tcheque. On pourrait penser
parfois a une sorte d'ecriture minimaliste, dans
les effets hypnotiques et repetitifs, ou a des
quasi-improvisations de village, si ce n'etait la
structure rythmique et polyphonique soigneusement
concue par les compositeurs.
Les compositeurs puisqu'en effet, ces pieces
sont signees collectivement des quatre
clarinettistes de l'ensemble, sans autre precision
quant a savoir qui a exactement commis quoi : ce
sont donc bien des improvisations collectives
soigneusement encadrees, une liberte surveillee de
tres pres. D'ou le nom de Clarinet Factory,
intraduisible vocable s'approchant de Fabrique de
[musique pour] clarinettes mais aussi Fabrique de
[musique par les] clarinettes, le vrai crossover
dans lequel chacun des elements constitutifs
abandonne ses caracteristiques les plus intimes
pour se glisser dans un autre langage.
On recommandera en particulier le truculent
Tango, ainsi que Glass Story qui fait sans doute
autant allusion a Philipp Glass qu'au verre (glass
) utilise pour certaines sonorites percussives.

Over the time of its existence, Clarinet Factory
(formerly the Czech Clarinet Quartet) has covered a
great deal of ground, from tradition classical and
jazz through ethnic and Minimalism to their own
creation. In addition to appearing at numerous
significant international festivals, the ensemble
has reached other momentous milestones: victory in
the International Songwriting Competition 2005
(USA, with the members of the jury including Tom
Waits and Jerry Lee Lewis), concerts with Bobby
McFerrin, the fascinating Eternal Seekers crossover
project with Lenka Dusilova and Beata Hlavenkova,
not to mention an inspiring tour of Senegal with
the jazz singer Jana Koubkova, film and ballet
music and encounters with Alan Vitous, which are
also featured on this CD. Every experience marks
and recasts, from a few bars of Dvorak's New World
Symphony to hip-hop in the street... The leitmotif
is seeking, the journey a destination in itself. A
gamut of rhythms and colours without the use of
electronic instruments, here and there enlivened by
a string quartet, finely spiced with Lenka
Dusilova's vocals... Isn't it about time we stopped
thinking about definitions and categories and
started enjoying a journey to an unknown place, Out
of Home?
