One such example is º ³ ³º Norwegian power metal band Guardians of Time. My º ³ ³º first time hearing the band was with their 2011 º ³ ³º release A Beautiful Atrocity, which initially º ³ ³º did very little for me, and left me quite º ³ ³º unimpressed. However, when the band released º ³ ³º their next album, Rage, and Fire, in 2015, I º ³ ³º decided to give them another shot, and this time º ³ ³º around I found myself instantly wowed by their º ³ ³º brand of hard-hitting, fast-paced power metal. º ³ ³º It turns out, that one release I tried before º ³ ³º had been a bit experimental, and even to this º ³ ³º day, while I certainly enjoy it more than I did º ³ ³º initially, it still remains my least favorite by º ³ ³º the band. Now, three years after me becoming a º ³ ³º fan, the band is set to release their fifth º ³ ³º full-length release, Tearing Up the World, and º ³ ³º this one is certainly more of an instant classic º ³ ³º than any of their others I’ve heard, so far! º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The band has changed their sound quite a bit º ³ ³º over the years, but on their previous album they º ³ ³º played a very aggressive, guitar-driven brand of º ³ ³º power metal, similar to what one would expect º ³ ³º from a German band, and this has continued with º ³ ³º Tearing Up the World. In fact, this is º ³ ³º definitely the fastest paced, most intense album º ³ ³º I’ve heard by the band so far, with the majority º ³ ³º of the tracks being very up-tempo while striking º ³ ³º a perfect balance between frantic verses and º ³ ³º very melodic, catchy choruses. There’s some º ³ ³º slightly thrashy guitar work at points, as well º ³ ³º as brief bursts of harsh vocals, most notably on º ³ ³º “Valhalla Awaits”, but for the most part, this º ³ ³º is about as pure a power metal album as you’ll º ³ ³º ever hear. Performances are strong across the º ³ ³º board, with the crunchy guitar work, in º ³ ³º particular, being a highlight, with a mix of º ³ ³º excellent riffs and grand solos, while the drums º ³ ³º are also quite interesting and rather complex at º ³ ³º times. Songwriting is excellent across the º ³ ³º board, and while the songs are generally fast º ³ ³º and straight-forward, there are a couple slower º ³ ³º tracks to serve as a nice change of pace, as º ³ ³º well as just enough surprises thrown in to keep º ³ ³º the album feeling fresh and inspired the whole º ³ ³º way through. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º One element of the band I needed some time to º ³ ³º get used to is vocalist Bernt Fjellestad. At the º ³ ³º time I first heard the band, I was not really º ³ ³º into rougher power metal vocals, which was º ³ ³º obviously a problem, because that’s exactly what º ³ ³º Bernt does. He has a rather deep voice and can º ³ ³º get very animated at times, coming pretty close º ³ ³º to screaming at the top of his lungs on º ³ ³º occasion, while generally being quite fiery and º ³ ³º powerful. He can deliver choruses nicely and º ³ ³º does so frequently on this album, and he also º ³ ³º does a good job of singing softly from time to º ³ ³º time, but for the most part, he sticks to being º ³ ³º very intense, and he isn’t afraid to throw in º ³ ³º some epic falsettos, either. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º I’ve found past Guardians of Time albums to be a º ³ ³º bit slow starting, but it’s safe to say, that’s º ³ ³º not the case with Tearing Up the World. The º ³ ³º album gets off to a blistering start with the º ³ ³º explosive title track, which opens up with some º ³ ³º hard-hitting riffs that would feel right at home º ³ ³º on a modern melodic death metal album, and º ³ ³º indeed we get our first glimpse at some brief º ³ ³º harsh vocals during the second verse. The song º ³ ³º overall is fast, intense, and has an excellent º ³ ³º chorus, as well as a fun solo section, and it º ³ ³º certainly gets the album off to a strong start. º ³ ³º The pace drops slightly on “Raise the Eagle”, a º ³ ³º lighter, more melodic track, which introduces º ³ ³º some light keyboards. It has a very classic º ³ ³º power metal sound to it, alternating between º ³ ³º mid-paced verses and a fast, very melodic º ³ ³º chorus, and it has one of the most melodic and º ³ ³º impressive solo sections on the album. Next is º ³ ³º “We Bring War”, a hard-hitting song, which also º ³ ³º had fairly slow verses, before speeding up for a º ³ ³º frantic and intense chorus, which stands as one º ³ ³º of the bands on the album. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The album only picks up further with “The º ³ ³º Burning of Rome”, one of the fastest tracks on º ³ ³º the album, slowing down briefly during the first º ³ ³º verse, before picking up the pace and never º ³ ³º looking back. It has probably the catchiest, the º ³ ³º most epic chorus on the entire album, as well as º ³ ³º one of the more relaxed performances from Bernt, º ³ ³º which ends up paying off in a big way. Following º ³ ³º that, “Kingdom Come” is even speedier and º ³ ³º doesn’t slow down at all, with some excellent º ³ ³º rhythm guitars and drums throughout, as well as º ³ ³º a very frantic but melodic chorus. It’s short, º ³ ³º but definitely one of the most addictive tracks º ³ ³º on the album. The first curveball comes next, º ³ ³º during “Valhalla Awaits”. The song itself is º ³ ³º typical high energy power metal, as always, with º ³ ³º some very fun, melodic verses, but it’s during º ³ ³º the chorus where it takes a surprising turn. The º ³ ³º guitar work stays very melodic throughout, but º ³ ³º the vocals are performed by former Immortal º ³ ³º vocalist Abbath, who uses his usual blackened º ³ ³º growls. Honestly, I usually don’t mind harsh º ³ ³º vocals in power metal, but I find the vocals º ³ ³º really clash with the melodic chorus here, and º ³ ³º if anything would fit better on the verses, or º ³ ³º even on one of the heavier tracks on the album, º ³ ³º such as the title track or “We Bring War”. To º ³ ³º have placed them on such a melodic track feels º ³ ³º like a bit of a mistake to me, and causes the º ³ ³º song to be my least favorite, even though the º ³ ³º rest of the track is still up to the excellent º ³ ³º quality of the rest of the album. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º After that slight disappointment, the band º ³ ³º bounces back with yet another super fast track º ³ ³º in “Brothers of the North”, this time offering º ³ ³º up some very intense verses, before giving way º ³ ³º to one of the most melodic and well-sung º ³ ³º choruses on the album, making it an instant º ³ ³º favorite. The last run through is especially º ³ ³º inspiring, and overall it’s simply an addictive º ³ ³º track. In case anyone thought the band was º ³ ³º incapable of slowing things down, “Light Won’t º ³ ³º Shine” comes in to offer a sledgehammer to the º ³ ³º head of that theory. Indeed, it’s a slow but º ³ ³º very hard-hitting crusher of a track, with some º ³ ³º especially hard riffs during the verses, giving º ³ ³º way to an excellent chorus. It’s both a nice º ³ ³º change of pace and an excellent track on its º ³ ³º own. Next is “As I Burn”, the other track on the º ³ ³º album to feature guest vocals. It’s another º ³ ³º speedy track, with slight thrash influences to º ³ ³º the guitar work, which fits perfectly as the º ³ ³º guest here is Tim “Ripper” Owens, using his º ³ ³º typical falsetto vocals to great effect. There’s º ³ ³º a nice guitar solo near the end, with some º ³ ³º slight Maiden influences, and overall it’s º ³ ³º another excellent track. The second and last º ³ ³º slower song on the album is “Drawn in Blood”, a º ³ ³º very folk-influenced song, with some folk º ³ ³º melodies thrown into the guitar work. It’s the º ³ ³º most relaxing track on the album, with some º ³ ³º excellent melodies, as well as some more lighter º ³ ³º vocals from Bernt, and while it’s fairly short- º ³ ³º lived, it’s certainly a very fun, catchy track, º ³ ³º and stands as my personal favorite, just because º ³ ³º it’s such an effective change of pace, and º ³ ³º because I love the folk melodies. Closing out º ³ ³º the album is “Masters We Were”, another fast- º ³ ³º paced track with an excellent chorus, and some º ³ ³º excellent melodic guitar work, as well as º ³ ³º probably the best solo section on the album. It º ³ ³º closes out the album in great form and is º ³ ³º another one of my personal favorites. As a º ³ ³º bonus, the band has offered up a live º ³ ³º performance of “Empire”, a track from Rage and º ³ ³º Fire, and it’s a fine performance, with º ³ ³º everything sounding near identical to the studio º ³ ³º version. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º I was hoping for Tearing Up the World to be a º ³ ³º fun, hard-hitting power metal album, and it’s º ³ ³º exactly that, except with a few nice surprises º ³ ³º thrown in, as well as one slight misfire. Aside º ³ ³º from that one chorus, though, the album is º ³ ³º excellent the whole way through, giving º ³ ³º listeners plenty of excellent fast and furious º ³ ³º power metal moments, as well as a couple very º ³ ³º effective slower tracks. It’s my favorite º ³ ³º Guardians of Time album to date, and one that º ³ ³º can easily be recommended, both to fans of the º ³ ³º band as well as to anyone looking for some great º ³ ³º guitar driven power metal, as it’s definitely º ³ ³º one of the best released this year. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Review written by Travis Green for º ³ ³º www.myglobalmind.com º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Bernt Fjellestad - Vocals º ³ ³º Paul Olsen - Guitars º ³ ³º Jonkis Werdal - Bass º ³ ³º Willy Aaraas - Drums º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» ³ ³º Release Tracklist º ³ ³ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÊÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ ³ ³ ³ ³ 01 - Tearing Up The World [03:46] ³ ³ 02 - Raise The Eagle [05:13] ³ ³ 03 - We´ll Bring War [03:57] ³ ³ 04 - Burning Of Rome [04:03] ³ ³ 05 - Kingdom Come [02:58] ³ ³ 06 - Valhalla Awaits [04:25] ³ ³ 07 - Brothers Of The North [04:09] ³ ³ 08 - Light Won´t Shine [03:04] ³ ³ 09 - As I Burn [04:22] ³ ³ 10 - Drawn In Blood [03:23] ³ ³ 11 - Masters We Were [05:06] ³ ³ ³ ³ Total Length : [44:26 minn ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» ³ ³ º Greetings To: º ³ ³ ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ ³ ³ ³ ³ Too all people who contributes to make this ³ ³ archive of good music in a exceptional conditions ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³þ þ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ
