Experimental guile л л is never at a premium with these Brazilians, and л л to pinpoint their recent sound, it feels л л strikingly similar to some eccentric fusion of л л mid-era Amon Amarth churning virulence and л л Stormlord's keener sense of reserved bombast. л л Malefactor in general prefers to approach their л л blend of death metal from a variety of avenues, л л and it tends to work out in their favor by giving л л albums like Anvil of Crom more lasting power on л л the whole. л л Musically, the biggest improvement on Sixth Legion л л concerns the drums. Thiago Nogueira really gives л л the band more stable footing atop which to build л л their murky tremolo barrage. Production is... л л interesting, with a guitar sound that totally л л fucking nails that mid-era Amon Amarth condensed, л л soupy grit when the tremolos are cooking. л л Conversely, it sounds somewhat thin during л л regular, choppier riffing patterns, so there is an л л obvious tradeoff there. Malefactor get quite л л fucking heavy at times on this album, perhaps л л heavier than ever, but there is something rather л л wanting regarding the melodic constituent. л л Coimbra's riff constructions feel somewhat exposed л л without many keyboards or other distractions to л л share the spotlight. A lot of Sixth Legion feels л л like passable, occasionally experimentally л л inveigling background-type music for the style. л л Vlad's vocals continue to prove he deserves more л л attention. As usual, he attempts many different л л styles, but I must single out his singing voice, л л which is surprisingly emotive and capable. More of л л that, please. Otherwise, it's a fairly standard, л л intelligible death metal bellow, but I found the л л shrieking he attempts on "Counting the Corpses" л л extremely distracting and unwanted. With a л л superior riffset behind him, perhaps his few л л deficiencies would be easier to gloss over. The л л historically-tinged lyrics read almost like л л Behemoth-lite, name-dropping deities and citing a л л heaping of historical buzzwords. Not especially л л deep, but welcome. Regarding individual songs, л л "The Styx River" features more clean vocals and is л л a decent breather, and "Counting the Corpses" has л л some monolithic riffs, but I'm finding a lot of л л the guitar melodies forgettable. л л So Sixth Legion is clearly a step down from Anvil л л of Crom. If Malefactor could take better advantage л л of the surprisingly capable musicians under their л л wings, they could possibly surpass their earlier л л high-water mark. Keeping this all in mind, the л л album still has some cool moments, just not enough л л to warrant an overt recommendation for the band л л like I have in the past. It's just okay. л В В Б Б А 1.
