Much of this might º ³ ³º be credited to a combination of the poor º ³ ³º treatment of said land’s German minority º ³ ³º population at the hands of Prince Vlad Tepes º ³ ³º (aka Vlad The Impaler) and their correspondingly º ³ ³º overactive imaginations. But be it the bloodlust º ³ ³º of the mythical Dracula, or the even more º ³ ³º horrifying literal manifestation of lycanthropy º ³ ³º that is the werewolf, there is a º ³ ³º characteristically German flavor to these now º ³ ³º ubiquitous manifestations of our fears, hence º ³ ³º the all too appropriate fact that one of power º ³ ³º metal’s leading cheerleaders of the order of º ³ ³º monsters Powerwolf hail from said nation. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Having solidified themselves as among the more º ³ ³º theatrically oriented and larger than life acts º ³ ³º of the second wave of the power metal revival º ³ ³º (starting in the mid-2000s), Powerwolf has since º ³ ³º taken their sound into more of an overtly º ³ ³º cinematic direction since the turn of the º ³ ³º decade, culminating in arguably their closest º ³ ³º flirtation with heavy metal film score in their º ³ ³º eighth album The Sacrament Of Sin. Though their º ³ ³º short stint as a would be tag-along act to the º ³ ³º more AOR oriented power metal sound of acts like º ³ ³º Masterplan and Edguy caught them a fair deal of º ³ ³º notice in 2005, it wasn’t until they began º ³ ³º moving in more of a keyboard-oriented, symphonic º ³ ³º direction similar to that of Turisas and º ³ ³º Rhapsody Of Fire, complemented with a fair º ³ ³º amount of church-oriented elements via a massive º ³ ³º pipe organ sound and a greater stylistic º ³ ³º affinity with the speed metal roots of German º ³ ³º forefathers Accept and Helloween that things º ³ ³º truly took shape, and this album sees this trend º ³ ³º taken to its logical conclusion. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º In an almost stereotypical fashion, this album º ³ ³º begins things with a lone church bell ringing in º ³ ³º the distance, like a less than subtle nod to the º ³ ³º founding fathers of heavy metal Black Sabbath’s º ³ ³º eponymous debut. However, in almost no time the º ³ ³º musical landscape that leads off the opening º ³ ³º number “Fire & Forgive” hits a beautiful º ³ ³º symphonic feel comparable to any number of epic º ³ ³º films released in the past 10 years or the º ³ ³º opening prelude of an Equilibrium album, which º ³ ³º is immediately chased by a barrage of riff happy º ³ ³º speed metal and triumphant neo-classical º ³ ³º trappings. Almost immediately it becomes º ³ ³º apparent that the decision of bassist David Vogt º ³ ³º to cut heads on the guitar with Benjamin Buss º ³ ³º has opened the band up to some new º ³ ³º possibilities, namely that of dueling and º ³ ³º harmonized lead work culminating in multiple º ³ ³º interchanges throughout the album comparable to º ³ ³º iconic Smith vs. Murray/Tipton vs. Downing º ³ ³º battles of the late 1980s. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The bulk of this opus’ contents present varying º ³ ³º degrees of familiar and surprise relative to º ³ ³º past works, though overall things fall fairly º ³ ³º close to the similarly triumphant and infectious º ³ ³º character of its predecessor Blessed & º ³ ³º Possessed. The obligatory mid-paced anthem slot º ³ ³º with tenor range opera vocals and blaring organs º ³ ³º aplenty is filled by the lyrically tongue-in- º ³ ³º cheek “Demons Are A Girl’s Best Friend”, while a º ³ ³º somewhat more unique blend of the same concept º ³ ³º with a Celtic folksy twist emerges in the º ³ ³º bagpipe-led ode to holy war “Incense And Iron”. º ³ ³º In a jolting turn of surprising events, one of º ³ ³º the strongest offerings to grace this collection º ³ ³º is the piano-driven power ballad “Where The Wild º ³ ³º Wolves Have Gone”, a poignant and unforgettable º ³ ³º mixture of old and new that features vocalist º ³ ³º Karsten Brill (aka Atilla Dorn) at his absolute º ³ ³º best. All the same, those who like their power º ³ ³º metal fast, furious and Helloween-infused will º ³ ³º find a highly impressive array of German speed º ³ ³º and melody in “The Sacrament Of Sin” and “Fist º ³ ³º By Fist”. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º In a sense, this album was all but foreshadowed º ³ ³º by its immediate predecessor, as has often been º ³ ³º the case as Powerwolf’s sound as evolved in a º ³ ³º highly methodical and gradual fashion. The º ³ ³º growing affinity with grandiose orchestral pomp º ³ ³º and retro heavy/power metal sensibilities were º ³ ³º so thick in how they reinterpreted the iconic º ³ ³º songs that were covered on the Blessed & º ³ ³º Possessed bonus CD Metallum Nostrum have º ³ ³º essentially exploded upon each original song º ³ ³º found here, culminating in yet another solid º ³ ³º performance that is close to, yet not º ³ ³º interchangeable with the previous three. It’s a º ³ ³º bit more impact based and less nuanced than the º ³ ³º rest of their 2010s offering, hence the author º ³ ³º of this review finds it an ever so slight step º ³ ³º down from said albums. All the same, this is a º ³ ³º slab of high fidelity nocturnal goodness that º ³ ³º will not cost this outfit any fans and likely º ³ ³º pick up quite a few more before all is said and º ³ ³º done. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Review written by hells_unicorn for º ³ ³º www.sonicperspectives.com º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Attila Dorn - Vocals º ³ ³º Charles Greywolf - Bass, Guitars º ³ ³º Falk Maria Schlegel - Keyboards º ³ ³º Roel van Helden - Drums º ³ ³º Matthew Greywolf - Guitars º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³º º ³ ³ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» ³ ³º Release Tracklist º ³ ³ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÊÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ ³ ³ ³ ³ - CD1 [ ] ³ ³ - [ ] ³ ³ 01 - Fire & Forgive [04:31] ³ ³ 02 - Demons Are A Girl's Best Friend [03:38] ³ ³ 03 - Killers With The Cross [04:10] ³ ³ 04 - Incense And Iron [03:58] ³ ³ 05 - Where The Wild Wolves Have Gone [04:14] ³ ³ 06 - Stossgebet [03:54] ³ ³ 07 - Nightside Of Siberia [03:53] ³ ³ 08 - The Sacrament Of Sin [03:27] ³ ³ 09 - Venom Of Venus [03:29] ³ ³ 10 - Nighttime Rebel [04:04] ³ ³ 11 - Fist By Fist (Sacralize Or Strike) [03:33] ³ ³ - [ ] ³ ³ - CD2 [ ] ³ ³ - [ ] ³ ³ 01 - Sacred & Wild (Epica) [04:48] ³ ³ 02 - We Drink Your Blood (Saltatio Mortis) [03:40] ³ ³ 03 - Kiss Of The Cobra King (Caliban) [04:18] ³ ³ 04 - Resurrection By Ereption (Battle Beast) [03:48] ³ ³ 05 - Night Of The Werewolves (Heaven Shall Burn [05:15] ³ ³ 06 - The Evil Made Me Do It (Kadavar) [05:30] ³ ³ 07 - Let There Be Night (Kissin´ Dynamite) [04:16] ³ ³ 08 - Army Of The Night (Amaranthe) [03:56] ³ ³ 09 - Amen & Attack (Mille Petrozza And Marc Got [03:03] ³ ³ 10 - Nata Vimpi Cvrmid/Ira Sancti (Eluveitei) [03:45] ³ ³ ³ ³ Total Length : [85:10 minn ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» ³ ³ º Greetings To: º ³ ³ ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ ³ ³ ³ ³ Too all people who contributes to make this ³ ³ archive of good music in a exceptional conditions ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³þ þ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ
