Every wanted to go to the beach, but bring the
uncomfortable vibes along with you? Teen Runnings have
been finding a sweet spot between the two for most of
this decade, and latest album Hot Air makes the
tropical-tinged elements even more clear. The project
used to use lots of guitar feedback to muck up their
ocean-adjacent rock, but now they use less-scuffed-up
melodies and more machine-generated sounds to construct
downright sunny-sounding numbers such as ˇ°Seatown
Punkˇ± and ˇ°Baby G.ˇ± Dig into those lyrics though and
the clouds come in. Teen Runnings zoom in on
relationships gone sour, life gone suffocating and even
how feeling happy only lasts for so long (on the
house-accented ˇ°Feeling Happyˇ±). Sometimes you just
need to deal with the bad stuff even in great weather.
